About Lucknow

Why Visit Lucknow?

Lucknow — the City of Nawabs — is synonymous with Adab (etiquette), Tehzeeb (culture) and some of the finest cuisine in India. The capital of Uttar Pradesh blends Mughal grandeur, Nawabi splendour and a modern cosmopolitan spirit. Its Imambaras, Chikan textile bazaars, melt-in-the-mouth Galouti Kebabs and the haunting ruins of the British Residency make Lucknow a city of extraordinary depth.

Bara Imambara (Asfi Mosque Complex)

Bara Imambara (Asfi Mosque Complex)

The crown jewel of Lucknow — a massive 18th-century Nawabi structure with the famous Bhulbhulaiya (rooftop labyrinth) that has 1,000 passages. Built by Nawab Asaf ud-Daula in 1784 as famine relief.

Hire a guide for Bhulbhulaiya — you will get lost without one
Rumi Darwaza (Turkish Gate)

Rumi Darwaza (Turkish Gate)

The iconic 60-foot gateway modelled on the Sublime Porte in Istanbul — the symbol of Lucknow. A masterpiece of Nawabi architecture, built in 1784.

Best photographed in golden hour (5–6 PM)
Chota Imambara (Hussainabad)

Chota Imambara (Hussainabad)

Even more ornate than Bara Imambara — an 1838 Shia Muslim shrine built by Nawab Muhammad Ali Shah. The interior glitters with Belgian chandeliers, gilded brocade and lacquer work.

The golden-domed interior is extraordinary; allow 45 minutes
The British Residency (Ruins)

The British Residency (Ruins)

The site of the famous Siege of Lucknow (1857 Uprising) — haunting ruins of the British Residency still bear bullet holes and cannon marks. Now a UNESCO tentative heritage site.

Visit at dusk — the ruins are atmospheric in fading light
Hussainabad Clock Tower

Hussainabad Clock Tower

The tallest clock tower in India — a 67-metre Victorian tower built in 1881, just across from the Chota Imambara. One of India's finest examples of Indo-Gothic architecture.

The clock tower and Imambara make a classic Lucknow photo
La Martiniere College

La Martiniere College

A stunning 19th-century school/college built by General Claude Martin — a unique blend of Baroque, Nawabi and Gothic architecture. One of the most beautiful buildings in India.

External viewing only; heritage architecture walk around the campus

Traveller Tips for Lucknow
Hire a licensed heritage guide from the Tourism office for the Bara Imambara Bhulbhulaiya — the labyrinth will genuinely confuse you.
Eat at Tunday Kababi (Chowk, original branch) — the one in malls is not the same.
Buy Chikan from UPICA government emporium or Gangotri — avoid tourist-trap shops near imambaras.
Photograph Rumi Darwaza during golden hour (5–6 PM) for the most dramatic shots.
Dress modestly when visiting Imambaras — head covering is recommended inside.
The heritage circuit (Bara Imambara → Rumi Darwaza → Chota Imambara → Clock Tower) can all be done on foot in 3–4 hours.
