About Chitrakoot

Why Visit Chitrakoot?

Chitrakoot — the "Hill of Many Wonders" — is where Lord Ram, Goddess Sita and Laxman spent 12 of their 14 years of exile (Vanvas). The most important Ram pilgrimage site after Ayodhya, Chitrakoot sits where Madhya Pradesh meets Uttar Pradesh, on the banks of the sacred Mandakini River, surrounded by forested hills brimming with ancient mythology.

Kamadgiri Parikrama

Kamadgiri Parikrama

A 5-km circumambulation of the sacred Kamadgiri hill — believed to be the living form of Lord Ram. Barefoot pilgrims chant Ram Naam on this flat forest trail. Extremely spiritually powerful.

Start parikrama early morning (5–7 AM); takes 1.5 hours barefoot
Ram Ghat Evening Aarti

Ram Ghat Evening Aarti

The main ghat on the Mandakini River — where Ram is believed to have bathed daily during his exile. The evening aarti here rivals Varanasi's in spiritual intensity.

Arrive 30 min before sunset for a good spot
Sati Anusuiya Ashram

Sati Anusuiya Ashram

A deeply serene forest ashram 15 km from Chitrakoot — where the sage Atri and his wife Sati Anusuiya (who performed the Trimurti birth miracle) lived. Ram visited during his exile.

The walk through forest to reach it is itself a meditation
Janaki Kund

Janaki Kund

A beautiful sacred pool on the Mandakini where Goddess Sita bathed during the exile. Surrounded by temples, it is a gentle, serene spiritual spot perfect for quiet contemplation.

Early morning here is especially peaceful
Sphatik Shila

Sphatik Shila

The crystal-clear rock on the Mandakini bank where Sita and Ram are believed to have rested — a sacred stone with ancient carvings. A very important pilgrimage stop.

Take a boat from Ram Ghat to reach it (5 min)
Bharat Milap Temple

Bharat Milap Temple

The spot where Bharat met Ram during the exile — an emotional and important episode from the Ramayana. The temple marks the exact location of this divine brotherly reunion.

Combine with Kamadgiri parikrama as it is on the path

Traveller Tips for Chitrakoot
Kamadgiri Parikrama is done barefoot on a natural trail — wear comfortable feet and be prepared for rough ground.
Bring a torch for Gupt Godavari caves — the inner section is completely dark.
Carry water — the parikrama and forest sites have limited refreshment stops.
Visit Pandav Falls between July and October for the most spectacular experience.
Chitrakoot is a deeply meditative place — minimise phone use and absorb the energy.
Accommodation is limited — book 1–2 weeks in advance for peak season (Oct–Feb).
