About Bodhgaya

Why Visit Bodhgaya?

Bodhgaya is the most sacred site in Buddhism — the exact spot in Bihar where Siddhartha Gautama sat under the Bodhi Tree and attained enlightenment to become the Buddha, 2,600 years ago. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a living pilgrimage destination for Buddhists, meditators and seekers from around the world.

Mahabodhi Temple Complex

Mahabodhi Temple Complex

UNESCO World Heritage Site — the 55m tall temple marking the exact spot of the Buddha's enlightenment. The Vajrasana (Diamond Throne) inside is the most sacred object in Buddhism.

Meditate silently at the Vajrasana for 15 minutes at dawn
The Sacred Bodhi Tree

The Sacred Bodhi Tree

A direct descendant of the original Bodhi Tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. Meditating beneath its branches is the most powerful experience in Bodhgaya.

The tree's fallen leaves are considered sacred; collect one as a blessing
Animesh Lochan Chaitya

Animesh Lochan Chaitya

The spot where the Buddha stood motionless for seven days after enlightenment, gazing at the Bodhi Tree in gratitude — a deeply moving meditation spot.

Less crowded than the main temple; very peaceful
Ratana Chankamana (Jewel Walk)

Ratana Chankamana (Jewel Walk)

The path where the Buddha walked in meditation for seven days after enlightenment — one of the seven sacred sites within the Mahabodhi complex.

Walk barefoot slowly, meditating on each step
Sujata Stupa (Bakraur)

Sujata Stupa (Bakraur)

5 km from Bodhgaya — where Sujata offered rice milk to the starving Siddhartha, giving him strength before enlightenment. A quiet, beautiful stupa on the Niranjana riverbank.

Sunrise here, with the river and stupa, is magical
Dungeshwari Caves (Mahakala)

Dungeshwari Caves (Mahakala)

12 km from Bodhgaya — the caves where Siddhartha practised severe asceticism before enlightenment. Three Hindu temples here, one inside a cave with a golden Buddha statue.

Take a shared auto from Bodhgaya; takes 25 minutes

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before visiting Bodhgaya

The essential Bodhgaya experiences are: (1) meditation under the sacred Bodhi Tree, (2) Mahabodhi Temple darshan, (3) Vajrasana (Diamond Throne) meditation, (4) visiting Thai, Tibetan and Japanese monasteries, (5) sunrise at Sujata Stupa, and (6) exploring Dungeshwari Caves where the Buddha practised asceticism.
Bodhgaya is approximately 240 km from Varanasi — about a 4–5 hour drive. Gaya (the nearest railway station) is 13 km from Bodhgaya. VisitKashi includes Bodhgaya in Buddhist circuit packages combining Varanasi, Sarnath and Bodhgaya.
November to February is ideal. Buddha Purnima (April/May) and December–January when the Dalai Lama gives teachings attract the most pilgrims. Tibetan New Year (Losar) in February is also a vibrant time to visit.
Bodhgaya is one of the best places in the world for meditation. The Dhamma Bodhi Vipassana centre offers free 10-day courses. Root Institute, Burmese Vihara and several Tibetan centres offer shorter programs. The energy of the place — being where the Buddha sat — makes meditation here uniquely powerful.
